As Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, press B to spin around and slap enemies with your tail. The B button is also used to attack your enemies As Fireball Mario, press B to throw a fireball.You will release the items as soon as you release B.
Holding the B button while running also allows you to pick up items and vulnerable enemies, like immobilized turtle shells. If the meter fills up and the P mark begins to flash, Raccoon or Tanooki Mario can take off and fly into the sky using their tails. If you run continuously, you will fill up your speed meter at the bottom of the screen. When you move to the left or right while holding B, Mario and Luigi will pick up speed. The primary use of the B button is to enable running. If you are Frog Mario, you don't need to use the A button to swim, but Frog Mario will swim even faster if you tap A. Tapping the A button makes Mario or Luigi swim forward in whatever direction they are currently facing. The A button is also used for swimming. When falling down as Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, tap the A button to flap your tail and slow down your descent. If you are running fast enough as Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, you can tap the A button to fly into the air. If you hold down the A button while landing on an enemy, you will perform a super jump, and bounce even higher. The longer you hold down the A button, the higher you will jump. The primary use of the A button is to jump. As Frog Mario, you can swim in either direction without the need to press. Pressing left and right can alter the direction you are moving through the air. Hold down the button while doing so to run. Left and Right Press left or right to walk in either direction. Press down while standing on a slope to slide to the bottom (except for Frog Mario). Press down while standing above a pipe to try and enter it. Press down to squat (except for Frog Mario). Down Press and hold down to climb down vines. Hold up while pressing to hop out of water. Hold up while pressing below an upside-down pipe to investigate whether you can enter it from below. 
Press up when standing in front of a door to enter the door. Use the direction pad to guide Mario and Luigi on the map, and throughout each world.
